Just got myself a Kombat off Tony for £700. I'm pleased. It goes well. I
wanted a big wave x-over for better lake days and occasional coastal trips
as a big board. I put the small fin in as I didn’t need anything
bigger.
To start I went out on the Axxis. I was fine, but the water was freezing
and I got the finger hots BIIIIIGGGG time. I gybed OK most of the time. It
was not that gusty, not as much as I thought it might be. The kid from
Grafham was there. VW camper parked up. Then the wind picked up and the 6.3
got to much of a handful, and Tony’d arrived so I went for a cuppa and
get my new toy.
I rigged the 4.7, and after a few runs got the hang of it OK. Then gibing
got easy and I hardly fell in unless I went for a chop hop or something out
the envelope. Phil turned up, he needed a lot of coaxing to get out and was
on go-slow – you know - fart ar/ound for long enough and you might miss
the wind “oh dear how sad – never mind”. Anyway he had a crap time on
his “S-type” and ended up down the winless corner for hours. I think he
must have got mild hypothermia as he was swimming a lot. Poor guy.
The Kombat is delicate to gybe, not like the F2 or a Starboard Carve where
it matter not how hard you push it wont gybe any less. The Kombat needs
coaxing round – maybe it was me – I don’t know.
Good days sailing.
Saw John Hibberd’s slide show with Roger from Tushingham. It was a good
account of how great the sailing is in Western Australia. Recommended. The
quiz was good too. Dave Skye team and his won – b*****stard.
